I just so happen that the week of his transition that I was in LA on another gig and got asked to stay over to do a special birthday party for some industry friends where JRocc and and I would head line. I was expecting to meet Jay that night as he was slated to come. I got a phone call around 3 pm from my Bro who’s party I was head ling saying Jay had “just made his transition.” I was like wow!!! We had crossed paths for years knew the same cats and the day I was to meet this dude, he left earth.
I am really don’t do funerals but I felt it was my duty to pay respects to the man. Thou I had literally a matter of hours to fly home to Chicago and repack for Japan I set it in my mind to make it happen. The day of Jay’s services my Bro Thomas (Dj Gargmel), Brother Spinna who had just had flown in and I went to pay our respects.
We made it to the church and then drove down to his internment on the hill. I saw a few familiar faces shook some hands and gave some hugs. It was a powerful because while on the hill my buddy who also happen to named Jay from back home tapped me and said “look up ” as the prayers where happening a plane over head was creating a heart out of smoke above us in the sky. If I am not mistaken you can find pictures and documentation of this somewhere on line. It was as if Jay was waving bye on his next journey and was happy the energies there to see him off.
We went back to Jay Dee’s and Commons home that they shared. Rashid (Common) and I went to high school earlier on so it was good to see him but not under those circumstances as he greeted us at the door. I felt a bit awaked with the presence of sadness in the room of family members and celeb friends. I re bonded with my boy Geology who I had not seen in a while and rapped with Wajeed. I had many thoughts at that moment in of the value of life and the value of making such an impression as Jay Dee had in such a short amount of time. It inspired me in a way to keep pushing through all the madness that comes with being a producer of the universes language we call “MUSIC”.
So those that know me know I am always preaching the gospel of Dilla. I have personally introduced a few people to power of his sound and skill. I will always respect him as a producer and a musical force. If you don’t know much off him educate yourself. He left a wealth of music for you to take a ride on. May the Orishas and Ancestors continue to bless him for his work. Ashe’

This is one of those tunes that I will always remember…
I remember when my Mom first introduced me to this album via one of our family musical exchanges. At first on face value I thought it would be a album of fluffy ballots due to the romantic nostalgic look on the cover. Along with the fact that Lady T did not look like your average soul singer, but boy looks can be deceiving. From then on out this album has always been a part of my repertoire.
“I need your Lovin” was a favorite of many prime time selectors back in the day. From Ron Hardy, Frankie, Larry, etc… dance floors still pulse from the sentimental lyrics and heavy rhythm. Knowing that Lady T has now taken her walk to the next plane, I just wanna salute you with this selection that was one of my first introductions to your soulful sound.

We have to work for a greater change. Things can never be the same as yesterday but progress, a proper evaluation of our lessons, and tools needs to be taken in account. City to City do we have a base of sufficient support (DJ>Dancer) to take this beautiful thing to the next level? Seems to me everything including values have taken a back seat to ego’s and propaganda. The Dancer and the DJ need each other. One without the other means nothing. DJ’s with out knowledge of programing and sound systems means nothing.
This complacinet and lazy ass attitude is for the fucking birds. I despise it. I am bread from a aggressive culture that was about breaking down walls and opening minds. What do mfers call themselves doing now? OH I GET IT DISC JOCKEYS (RACING FOR RECORDS AND ATTENTION). STOP THIS BULLSHIT APPROACH AND GET THE FUCK OUT THE WAY IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR SHIT TOGETHER, YOU ARE TEARING SHIT AT THE SEAMS. I look around and my own city is a shell of itself. We can make excuses but really, what is the real deal? Or do you really know? Prt1
Listen up Fam!!!
