When I was growing up on of my greatest heros was Bruce Lee, as he was for many of us in urban black america. The Fascination with karate and kung fu for rampant in the 70′s. We all wanted to play karate man, wear white socks and buy chinese slippers.LOL. Bruce amazed us with his skill and his confidence as a martial artist. As I went on in my life to actually being to study martial arts I being to understand the philosophy, dedication, and discipline involved in training mind and body to perform as a martial artist.
As a man reading Bruce’s books I began to really appreciate his philosophy not only towards martial arts but life. During many points of studying and experimenting with music I applied Bruce’s understanding of self expression to my work. I draw from many influences when creating my artwork as I am the sum and minus of my experiences but through the knowledge and evaluation self, our experiences become fluid in the action of expression. This is was the key to part of Bruce’s brilliance.
Elder Bruce was complex and simple, being and not being. Building and tearing down the self to get to the real. A lot of his teachings that are a part of wisdom that was passed to him through study is in his book “The Tao of Jeet Kune Do”. Its one thing to fight is another to have understanding of mind, body, spirit connection. Master Bruce’s power is radiated from his films of course but his message is far more magnetic. I can’t being to really fully articulate the importance of his work on earth being that he really changed the world in many different ways. He was the first to of his kind never to be copied. His cultural importance to this and the last hundred years is undeniable. RZA from wu tang made very profound observation on the history channels documentary “How Bruce Lee changed the world”, he mentions that fact that the bible and the koran reference major prophets and minor prophets, the work and energy that Bruce brought to the world, they way he touched soo many people in the way that he did, and the way he changed the world is through his work is the WORK of a prophet.
On this day 37 years ago Master Bruce made his transition, so on this day I salute one my greatest HERO’S and inspirations. His energy still lives on. I will always respect you in full POWER!!!!!
